James Cook
Fragmented forms, timeless emotion.
By creating fragmented human forms, James creates space for the viewer's imagination to fill in the gaps themselves.
To reflect.
To connect.
To Imagine.
James is a South African sculptor whose bronze works explore the intricate dance between intimacy and abstraction. Drawing inspiration from Greek mythology and the beauty of the human form, James creates sculptures that capture fleeting moments of connection, passion, and vulnerability.
His artistic journey began in childhood with pencil drawings of African animals he created alongside his father. Though he studied Finance and Accounting at the University of Cape Town and went on to complete a master's degree in risk management, James was always drawn to art. After exploring various mediums, he discovered his true passion in bronze.
Initially rooted in realism, James’ style has evolved to embrace abstraction, giving his work a layered conceptual depth. Fragmented forms and contrasting shapes such as organic and geometric, detailed and minimalist invite the viewer to engage more deeply, allowing room for personal interpretation and emotional resonance.
His sculptures often feature multiple figures sculpted in moments of closeness, tension, or movement, each piece echoing the complexity of love and the human experience. Through this interplay of form and feeling, James encourages us to reflect on our own relationships and stories.
Every sculpture is a signed and limited edition, carefully crafted to bring both technical mastery and emotional depth into conversation. James lives and works in Cape Town, continually pushing the boundary between realism and abstraction in his ongoing artistic evolution.
