Strijdom has built a lifelong dialogue with the land. Based in Stellenbosch, he is widely recognised as one of South Africa’s leading land artists, shaping works directly from what nature offers him. Stones, branches, water, sand, or soil become his materials. Each piece is temporary, shifting and eventually dissolving back into the landscape. What remains is the trace of a moment, recorded through photography, and the memory of having altered the environment in a way that is both respectful and transformative.
Strijdom’s art is less about imposing on a site than it is about listening to it. Walking through a forest, along a beach, or across the dry expanses of the Karoo, he allows the place itself to suggest what form it might take. Circles, spirals, and geometric patterns emerge as though nature has whispered them into being. These forms are not static but part of an ongoing conversation between growth and decay, permanence and impermanence.
His practice has taken him far beyond South Africa. Strijdom has created works in Europe, Asia, and Australia, and his commissions and exhibitions have placed him on an international stage. Yet his art remains deeply rooted in the South African landscape, carrying with it a sense of place that is unmistakable. Whether it is a memorial sculpture in South Korea, a large-scale installation in Italy, or a quiet intervention along a Cape shoreline, his works always remind us of the delicate balance between human presence and the rhythms of the earth.
Collectors and audiences are often struck by how his work manages to be both monumental and fragile. A spiral of stones might hold the weight of centuries, while a structure of reeds may vanish with the next tide. What unites these gestures is an awareness of time and a respect for the fleeting beauty of each moment.
Strijdom’s art invites us to slow down, to consider our place in the natural order, and to see the land not as a backdrop but as a living partner in creation. His works are not only about what we see, but about how we feel standing in their presence: grounded, connected, and reminded that even the most temporary of marks can leave a lasting impression.
