Corli Slabbert

Painting the power of nature

Each canvas becomes a place where nature and human emotion intersect.

Atmospheric

Expressive

Immersive.

Born and raised in South Africa, Corli draws inspiration from the country’s vast landscapes and untamed seascapes, translating their power and beauty into vibrant, atmospheric paintings. Her work moves beyond representation, aiming instead to stir memory, reflection, and emotion in the viewer.

Deeply influenced by the emotive use of colour in Mark Rothko’s paintings, as well as the expansive vistas of April Gornik and Vija Celmins, Corli weaves together elements of abstraction and realism to capture both the seen and the felt. Each canvas becomes a place where nature and human emotion intersect, inviting viewers to step into the work and encounter their own stories within it.

Her process begins with a darkened canvas, upon which she layers oils to build depth and light, creating pieces that radiate both intensity and stillness. Cloud formations often take centre stage, embodying the movement, energy, and mystery of the natural world. Through this approach, Corli imbues her seascapes and landscapes with an ethereal quality that feels at once familiar and otherworldly.

For Corli, a painting succeeds when it forges a connection between artist, subject, and viewer. Her art is an ongoing journey of discovery, one that transforms not only the work itself but also those who encounter it.
